Tzigane is a piece that can turn into a stunt; this was not that. He took the opening unaccompanied pages slowly, with an improvisatory freedom that made the later accelerations feel like a release rather than a trick. The harmonics and the left-hand pizzicato were clean, and the tone never lost its center in the highest positions.
