An Allegro con brio that was genuinely con brio without becoming a race. The repeated chords in the development were voiced so that the inner lines stayed audible, and the second subject had a tenderness that the movement's energy made more striking. The transition to the coda was prepared across the whole recapitulation, not sprung at the last moment.
