Matías Herrera
The double bass is not the instrument one expects to carry a String Prize, and he made the case for it. The tone was warm and even across all four strings, with no growl used as a substitute for phrasing. The lyrical second theme was shaped with a singer's rubato, and the passagework near the end kept its clarity at speed.
